One hopes they get the policy and rules written and posted before July.: USA Taekwondo is working on implementing a policy that requires a medical certificate from all participants at our 2015 National Championships that must be presented prior to being allowed to compete in our National Event. The concern is for the safety of our athletes. As recent as last year, an athlete participating in the Egypt Open fell over and died from a heart attack, not from a blow to the head, during a Taekwondo match. This athlete had a pre-‐existing condition that, if known, may have prevented his death. As a result, the World Taekwondo Federation has mandated adoption of a Medical Code that mandates a “Wellness Check-‐up Physical” for athletes before allowing them to participate in WTF-‐sanctioned events. We take the safety of our Taekwondo athletes very seriously, and we hope that coaches, club owners, parents and athletes will also take this matter seriously. For the 2015 National Championships that take place in July 2015, it will be mandatory that all participating athletes have proof of this “Wellness Check-‐up Physical” before being allowed to compete. We will also require that all participants at the 2015 National Team Trials also meet this medical requirement. We are working to enact this policy and to insure that everything is in place to make this a seamless implementation.
