Since getting engaged this summer Ive found it pretty alarming how many times people have asked if Ill be changing my name. Their faces turn to horror when they hear my answer, and instantly the questions start pouring in, but WHY!, Dont you WANT to be a Donald?, How will people know you are married? The list goes on. I guess I didnt realize it was such a shocking thing to want to keep my name, to want to stay the same Riva Fisher that Ive always been, to want to be known as the name that Ive become known as. Im not sure why it is so surprising- women are (I hope you agree) people too, and as a person it seems rather fitting to remain in the same state of personhood as you have always been. I would never expect Mat to change his name, but it IS 2014 and equality is all the rage so why, when I ask this of the aforementioned inquisitive friends, does the idea elicit nothing more than a bit of scoffing laughter before being pushed aside? Perhaps it is to say that all names are created equal, but some are more equal than others.
