Since joining local Facebook groups in early September, I’ve read a great deal of debate as to who can best represent Oshawa as mayor. I’ve been so bold as to post a lengthy prediction of likely winners in this election, both for the mayor’s office and for council, and in doing so I have been seen as supporting the ‘establishment.’ However, after much thought, I conclude it would be best for Oshawa to move away from the past, and to embrace a fresh start. To that end, I support Rosemary McConkey as mayor of the City of Oshawa. Rosemary’s community activism and her persistence in holding elected officials to account are very much needed. Her attempts at highlighting the need for a better culture at city hall show a resilience of character that is sure to serve Oshawa well in the future, to better engage citizens, to ensure proper financial oversight, and to take the city in a new direction. It requires a great deal of personal sacrifice to run for office, particularly for mayor, and in my view Rosemary has so far run a very respectable campaign, focusing on issues and ideas. I attended Rosemary’s campaign office this morning, and I am pleased to submit this post as a show of support.
