Since know one elaborated on what actual service was at a Service Station, my daughter thought I should elaborate. She cant believe it. So hear it goes. Wed turn into the service station (in our 54 Buick) and drive over a rubber hose that activated a bell inside the station. Usually 2 guys, sometimes in uniform, would come out. My dad would have already popped the hood. One guy would come to the drivers window, the other guy was under the hood. My dad would say fill her up with ethyl. Ethyl was the highest octane. Apparently the straight 8 Buick ran better on ethyl. It was probably +-$.25/ gal. The attendant would crank a small handle on the side of the pump that would turn the meters to zero, and start pumping. Sometimes the guy under the hood would walk around to my dads window, dip stick in hand, and show him the oil level. Looks a quart low My dad would usually ask for bulk oil. The attendant would go back into the station and return with a clear glass jar, with a narrow spout, full of oil and put it in the engine. Meanwhile the other guy was checking the tire pressure, radiator level and washing the windshield. All stations had free water and air on the island at the pumps. When everything is in order, my dad would pay with cash, and the attendant would say thanks. see you next time Dick The end.
