Since nobody called me out on the dubious U.aureomaculata I posted - TopicsExpress

Since nobody called me out on the dubious U.aureomaculata I posted the other day, Ill be a bit more blunt and openly say that I am not sure of the ID of the plant below. In August 2003 I found an odd aquatic Utric in the lowland grasslands (known as llanos in Venezuela), on the road between Ciudad Bolivar and Caicara del Orinoco. It grew in Mauritia flexuosa swamps and I wouldve probably just brushed it off as an oddball U.cucullata – except that regular U.cucullata grew there too. This weird Utric was similar to, yet slightly larger than U.cucullata. The only other know species it could be was U.myriocista – which is much larger and has darker pink flowers. And the only other member of Section Vesiculina is U.purpurea, but this one is very different and native to N & C America. Thus, it could be that this is a stunted U.myriocista, or maybe it’s a new species. Right now I don’t know. See below some pics of this mystery plant & the U.cucullata it grew with, as well as a picture of U.myriocista in Brazil for comparison.
