Since the age of 14, I have been resisting military rule and the military’s role in politics. It seems that our struggle for a free, democratic and civilian Pakistan will continue for the rest of our lives. Throughout life, I have opposed Nawaz Sharif’s politics. I disagree with the ideology he stands for, and also with the style of his politics. However, I do not think that in the past 14 months, Mr. Sharif has done something terribly wrong. He didnt promise a revolution. His government is like any other Pakistani government. Nevertheless, he has started some projects, which could be good for the country in the long run. Indeed, whenever I use the motorway I appreciate Mr. Sharif because building communication infrastructures is essential for trade and economic development of any state. I believe that the current agitation campaign against Mr. Sharif is not based on principles. It can plunge Pakistan into further troubles. It appears that Nawaz Sharif has become a target because: 1. If not all, few generals are definitely playing the same old game. They do not accept the civilian rule in Pakistan. These generals want controlled democracy where the military controls foreign and security policies. Most of Pakistan’s past and present crises are result of its military’s wrong policies. Imran Khan and Tahir ul Qadri are new instruments for maintaining military’s control over power and politics. The generals are using Imran, Qadri and some media houses to pressurize the Prime Minister. 2. Nawaz Sharif is not acceptable to some generals because he is trying to normalize relations with India. Mr. Sharif has understood that without normalization of relations with India, Pakistan can’t succeed as a viable state. However, generals don’t like that a civilian leader makes key decisions with regard to India. 3. Nawaz Sharif also wants a new start of Pak-Afghan relations. Military ruler General Zia-ul-Haq had dragged us into Afghan quagmire and General Hamid Gul, General Akhter Abdul Rahman, General Mirza Aslam Bag and dozens and dozens of other generals continued disastrous Afghan adventures at the cost of the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan. They never told the people of Pakistan about their murderous games in Afghanistan. People of Pakistan have been paying the price of generals’ misadventures in Afghanistan. Terrorism is one outcome of our interference in Afghanistan. Ironically, now Nawaz Sharif, the spiritual son of Zia-ul-Haq and a protégé of General Hamid Gul, is the one who is trying to reform Afghan-Pakistan relations and he is by passing khakis. His wish has made him an unwanted man in the prime minister house. 4. If General Musharraff is punished for violating the Constitution, it will set an example. In future no general/generals will dare suspend the constitution. Nawaz Sharif wants to set that example and this desire has become his biggest crime. In history, Imarn and Qadri’s role and actions will be written with black ink. Their marches are insulting peoples’ will. They have no legal or moral ground to blackmail an elected government and elected institutions. Plotters make plots but it is not necessary that everything goes by their plan. There is no legal way to remove the Prime Minister. Imarn and Qadri’s flop shows can’t force the Prime Minister to step down. Now plotters are suggesting Ch. Nasir’s name for the prime minister-ship. Even Shahbaz Sharif is acceptable. This plan may also fail. However, if Nawaz Sharif is forced out he will re-emerge as a bigger and stronger leader. Shiraz Paracha
