Since the coalition gave train companies like First the flexibility to raise fares 1% and later 3% above inflation, we’ve seen fares on popular commuter routes rise more than 25%, twice as fast as wages. The cost of a season ticket between Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads has increased by £276 between 2010 and 2014 – despite a journey time of just 11 minutes each way. The Government has failed to stop customers from being ripped off. This has gone on for far too long, a Labour Government will bring an end to these huge price hikes by capping fares and ensuring customers receive the cheapest possible ticket, as part of the most radical reforms since privatisation.
