Since the fall of Major General Siad Barre in 1991, Somalia has remained without a national government (the so-called Transitional Federal Govt controls just Mogadishu and a couple of towns. Most part of Somalia is controlled by militias including Alshabab). In 1992, a US led UN peace mission was sent but the Americans pulled out their soldiers in 1995 due to a humiliating battle in Mogadishu (US soldiers were killed and their bodies were tied to vehicles and dragged around Mogadishu). A second attempt to secure the peace and unity of Somalia was led by Ethiopia in 2006. Although the Ethiopians succeeded in breaking the front of the then Islamic Court Union which had almost succeeded in controlling most part of Somalia, they pulled out their troops in 2009, with the emergence of Alshabab with their terror tactics against the Ethiopians. A third attempt aimed at ensuring peace in Somalia was led by AU in 2011 with Kenya volunteering their troops. The irony of their story is that Somalians had fought very hard in a bloody civil war to oust a dictator in 1991 and after 22 years they wish they have a dictator. Sad for them!
