Since the immigration reform topic is back in the news, I am weighing in, asking you to consider economics 101 and changing my position. I used to be very pro-amnesty for illegal’s since I’ve worked in construction and seen a very high quality work force. I see it the same when I look into the kitchens at my favorite restaurant. The only problem with amnesty is simple supply and demand economics 101. There is an abundance of low skilled workers in this country and this drives entry level wages down. Excess labor is no different that excess corn, prices go down. Illegal workers are willing to work low skill jobs at a lower price than low skilled Americans, leaving many low skilled Americans to dependency on the government. Amnesty and wages are very connected, and as far as I can tell, there is only one win/win solution. Deport most of the illegal labor, wages will rise, welfare rolls will drop, deficits cut, unemployed rate goes down. I dare you to disagree with this connection. While I believe the federal welfare state is unconstitutional, like not even close, it is here to stay. The only way mass amnesty works is if we can trade the welfare rolls to another country for the illegals. Not likely or appropriate. America is obligated to its citizens first and no other country intentionally imports mass amounts of low skilled workers. Most do the opposite. Now I am not heartless, I have more sympathy for the illegals I used to work with than I do for half of the low skilled workers I hired in the construction industry. Clearly there needs to be some amnesty for certain situations, but most must leave. And those arguing for a hike in the minimum wage without considering it will guarantee higher un-employment and bigger welfare rolls, better consider their immigration positions. I know my position is not politically possible. Dems want more votes and republicans want to maintain cheap labor for their donors. You are both wrong and f%^&ing up this country.
