Since the legalization of recreational marijuana at the beginning of 2014, Colorado has seen more than 30 explosions from the manufacture of butane hash oil, many in multi-family housing units. Butane hash oil is a potent marijuana concentrate that uses highly combustible butane to extract THC and resin from marijuana leaves. Colorado Fire Captain Siegfried Klein, who is also a Colorado Police Officer, described how marijuana legalization has affected public safety in Colorado and shared his first-hand experiences dealing with butane hash oil explosions. With 21 years of experience as a professional firefighter and paramedic, Klein currently serves as Chief Fire and Explosive Investigator for the City of Aurora and has been sworn as an expert witness in both municipal and district court.
