Since we are now in the holiday season I would like to take a moment to give out a warning. Every year during the holidays thousands of new pets are purchased or adopted as Christmas gifts. Over half of these animals are dumped or killed within the first year. So if you are thinking of buying yourself or another a holiday companion please do your research first. Dogs and cats are not the only animals who suffer. Exotic pets such as snakes, chinchillas, and even the lowly hermit crab are popular pets that die very young because most pet stores actually give out incorrect information and sell cages and food that can kill your pet. Did you know that the average alfalfa pellet diet for rabbits can lead to multiple health problems and kill your rabbit if given as the primary or only source of food? Did you know that almost all habitats sold for hermit crabs dont promote healthy growth and usually lead to the animal dying within a few years when their lifespan is actually 10+? Did you know that guinea pigs are like people and have to get their vitamin C from oranges and other outside sources or they will die? These are all important facts that many new owners never find out and are left wondering why their new pet just died. So please research species and breed information as much as possible before acquiring a pet because you need to know a lot more than the flimsy paper petco pamphlets tell you.
