Since we seem to be experiencing problems with our web site and some people are not able to view it this morning, we will post our local news to Facebook: A van was pulled from a swimming pool located on Brow Road at Cloudland on Sunday night. Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader said that they received a call about the van late yesterday evening. The GBI was called to the scene along with the Georgia State Patrol. Reports indicate that there was a body inside the van, but no positive identification has been made at this time. The body has been sent to the GBI Crime Lab for verification.There is some speculation that the body may be that of a missing Dade County man. Dade County Sheriff Ray Cross was on the scene in Chattooga County last night according to Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader. A Chattanooga television station reported that family members of the missing man said that his van had been found; however, that report stated that the van had been found on Lula Lake Road which is over twenty miles away from Cloudland in Chattooga County. We will have more information as it becomes available. Students around the area are out of school this week for Thanksgiving. Trion City Schools and Chattooga County Schools are both closed this week. Also schools in Cherokee County, Alabama and DeKalb County, Alabama are closed this week. The Chattooga County Agricultural Fair Council is inviting anyone that volunteered at the fair this year to an a volunteer appreciation luncheon coming up tomorrow at the Depot in Summerville. The luncheon will be catered by Bonnie’s Family Restaurant and is free to anyone that volunteered at the 2014 Chattooga County Agricultural Fair. Also at the meeting the fair council will be looking for ideas to improve the 2015 Chattooga County Agricultural Fair. Saturday, November 29, 2014 is Small Business Saturday – a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities. This year Summerville Better Hometown was selected to receive the American Express Small Business Saturday Promotional Tool Kit to share with participating Downtown Businesses. Shoppers making purchases on November 29 at participating stores will receive special promotional items. A candy cane scavenger hunt will take place between the hours of 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Shoppers must visit the participating stores for details. Small businesses are the backbone of our cities, towns, and neighborhoods. They create local jobs, provide access to valuable goods and services, and act as economic multipliers because the money that is spent at a small business tends to stay in the community. Earlier this month, a Chattooga County deputy was dispatched to a home on Highway 157 at Cloudland after receiving a report of property damage. One man told the officer that he had seen a controlled fire at his neighbors home earlier that day. But about three hours before the officer arrived, the man saw that his own stack of railroad ties had caught fire. The man said he had about 120 ties at about eight dollars each, bringing the total value of the damage at $960. A report was filed for future reference. On November 14th, a Chattooga County officer met with a woman that told him that she was the victim of an identity theft. The woman said that the Walmart Credit Card Company contacted her to tell her that someone attempted to obtain a credit card in her name. When she contacted the credit bureau, she was told that someone used her Farm Bureau credit card and her Chase credit card to make purchases in Alabama and in Menlo, Georgia. The woman was unaware of the purchases or the businesses where the cards were used.The officer told the woman that an account number and billing receipt would be needed to continue with an investigation, so the woman retrieved them to file a report for future reference. The USGS reports a 2.5 magnitude earthquake Friday night in northwest Georgia. The quake was centered in Whitfield County. The location was east of Varnell Georgia between Prater Mill and Toonnerville, Georgia. This is about 8 miles east of Dalton and 83 miles north-northwest of Atlanta. The time of the quake was around 8:20 Friday evening. There were no reports of any damage from the quake. The Chattooga Basketball teams split with Gordon Central Friday night. The varsity and JV boys cruised to easy victories, while the two girls squads suffered loses in hard fought games. The teams return to action this Tuesday at LaFayette. JV girls tip at 3:00 while varsity action gets underway at 6:00.Their next game will be the home opener Tuesday, December 2nd vs. Model. The Chattooga County FFA will be hosting a ham shoot coming up next month. The ham shoot will be Saturday, December 13, 2014 and will be held at the Chattooga County Agricultural Center located at 33 Middle School Road in Summerville. Rounds will be $5 each with shells provided. Prizes will include hams, turkeys, Boston butts and cash. The event benefits the Chattooga County FFA Livestock Show Team.
