Since weve had a few tram posts today, heres my favourite. The last section of the tram route to Darling St Wharf, East Balmain, had a steep grade. For safety, a counterweight dummy tram car was installed to prevent trams running away down the hill. The dummy car pushed a heavy counterweight that ran back up the hill in a tunnel laid under the road. It can clearly be seen in the later photo on the left, and hides behind the tram in the older photo. The dummy car resides now in the Powerhouse Museum.
