Singapore accident annual report 21 March 2013 MEDIA RELEASE Workplace fatality rate at all time low Reported number of workplace injuries up slightly Singapore saw its workplace fatality rate decline from 4.9 per 100,000 employed persons in 2004 to 2.1 per 100,000 employed persons in 2012, a record low over the past nine years. (See Figure 1) The number of workplace fatalities fell from 61 in 2011 to 56 in 2012, according to the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Statistics Report 20121. However, the number of reported workplace injuries and incidences of occupational diseases2 (ODs) increased. 2 Reported workplace injuries went up by 9.8%3, contributing to 3.2% more man-days lost due to work accidents (18,158 man-days lost in 2012), compared to 2011. OD cases rose by 18%, from 839 reported in 2011 to 987 cases in 2012, mainly due to heightened monitoring efforts by MOM’s Occupational Safety & Health specialists to encourage early detection and reporting. The majority (88%) of these were cases of noise-induced deafness. Of these, over 98% of workers were diagnosed at the early stage when intervention measures can be taken to prevent further deterioration. Table 1: Number of Workplace Injuries and Occupational Diseases, 2011 and 2012 1 The WSH Statistics Report analysed work incidents that were reported to the Ministry of Manpower. 2 An occupational disease is a disease contracted as a result of an exposure to risk factors arising from work activity. 3 In 2012, there were 11,113 overall workplace injuries, up from 10,121 in 2011. 2012 2011 Percentage Change Workplace Injuries 11,113 10,121 ↑ 9.8% Fatal Injuries 56 61 ↓ 8.2% Major Injuries 588 556 ↑ 5.8% Minor Injuries 10,469 9,504 ↑ 10.2% Occupational Diseases 987 839 ↑ 17.6%
