Single Parent Families By: Michael Tullis There is a new trend in today’s family dynamics. Single parent families are becoming more and more prominent. There are families with one parent raising the child or children, there are also children being raised by one parent even though there are two parents, and there are children being raised by both parents in separate homes. Today’s society is evolving with more resources for single parent families to help ease the workload. The Department of Social and Health Services in King County offers child care resources to help pay for childcare for a single parent while they are at work. The parent just has to pay a small percent of the monthly bill. They also have resources like free lunches in public school. These types of resources help single parent families. A single parent family needs all the help they can get because there are extra strains that add stress to the parent and children’s lives. Stress such as paying all the bills with one person’s income instead of two incomes like the “normal” family. Especially when there were two parents and they split up. The income gets cut in half and sometimes the income gets cut all the way out. If a stay at home mom or dad gets left with no job to take care of all the children stress and anxiety can take a toll on the family. It is best to sit down and talk with everyone in the family. It will help the children and parent to communicate about all their emotions and feelings surrounding the changes in the family. It is always best to bring all of this to the surface in order to ease the pain and live well together. Working as a family with each other and not against each other will produce more happiness even though it will not take all the pain away it does help. apa.org/helpcenter/single-parent.aspx
