Sinn Féin MEP for the Midlands North West Constituency, Matt Carthy, has today commented on a report by Trinity College, which finds “general and robust evidence of mental health declines for mothers of emigrantsMr Carthy said:“Today’s report reveals the true heartbreak of hundreds of thousands of mothers across this country as they have been forced to watch their children leave their community and family behind in order to create a life abroad.“The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing report, which demonstrates that at the peak of emigration in 2013 up to 89,000 people emigrated from this country in a single year, showed a rise in depressive symptoms in mothers who have had one or more of their children emigrate.“Unfortunately, in my constituency, which stretches from Louth and Kildare up to Donegal and down to Galway, not a single village or town has escaped the blight of emigration. While it is startling to see the stark effects outlined in black and white, nevertheless I am not surprised at the findings of the report given my countless interactions with parents of emigrant children, who have told me personally of their heartbreak.“It is clear from today’s report that our young people and their parents have been let down badly by the poor political choices and incompetence of previous and current Governments. Action must be taken to ensure opportunities exist for every young person to carve out a future for themselves in this country, within their own communities and surrounded by those who care for them.”
