Sion hospital intern dies of MDR-TB; docs to protest today. After remaining ill for more than five months, the 24-year-old LTMG Sion Hospital intern died of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) at PD Hinduja Hospital on Sunday evening. Following Dr Samidha Khandare’s death, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has decided to protest against the sorry state of affairs of health workers on Doctors’ Day (July 1). Dr Santosh Wachchoure, president of MARD, said, “She has died on the eve of the Doctor’s Day. We have been questioning the administration regarding providing us hygienic accommodation and food and it is high time they notice this.” Samidha was diagnosed with tuberculosis in brain on February 13 and have been in the intensive care unit since then. Her brother Dr Shekhar Khandare said, “We don’t know who the culprit is in my sister’s case, but this should be an eye opener to both doctors and administration. Administration needs to ensure that doctors get basic needs like hygienic accommodation and nutritious food.” MARD says the conditions are the same in all government and civic hospitals. LTMG Sion hospital took the first step recently by isolating its chest out door patients ‘department (OPD) from the rest and are in the process of implementing the air borne infection control guidelines to deal with the tuberculosis
