Sir Alex Ferguson is considering a dramatic return to manage - TopicsExpress

Sir Alex Ferguson is considering a dramatic return to manage Manchester United following a disastrous debut campaign with his successor, David Moyes, in charge at Old Trafford. These are the claims made by influential Manchester United fanzine Red Issue, who state in their latest edition that Ferguson, who retired at the end of last season after spending 26 years in the Red Devils’ hot seat, is weighing up a possible return to management if the club decides to part company with Moyes. Ferguson played a key role in appointing Moyes as his successor at the end of last season. The 72-year-old was convinced that the long-serving Everton boss was the perfect - and, indeed, only - candidate for the job, and the club subsequently handed Moyes a six-year contract. However, not even Ferguson could have envisaged just how badly Manchester United would fare in their first season under the new manager. Manchester United have gone from Premier League champions to a club competing for a Europa League spot in less than 12 months under Moyes. The Red Devils currently find themselves down in seventh position, a massive 18 points behind league-leaders Chelsea, following Sunday’s lacklustre 3-0 home defeat to fierce rivals Liverpool. With a top-four finish now out of the picture, and qualification for the next round of this season’s Champions League campaign unlikely following last month’s shock 2-0 defeat to Olympiakos, Manchester United are on course to suffer their worst season for more than two decades. The north-west outfit were also knocked out of the FA Cup - at home, against Swansea City - at the third round stage, while their Capital One Cup run ended at the semi-final stage after a woeful two-legged tie and subsequent penalty shoot-out against Sunderland. Ferguson, after announcing his decision to retire at the end of last season, insisted that he has no desire to return to management. His teams were renowned for their dramatic late comebacks, but this comeback would be more breathtaking than all of those put together.
