Sir Alex Fergusons playing career never matched the stratospheric heights his managerial one did - but he did play for the famous Glasgow Rangers. In his new autobiography Fergie discusses the psychology of management in detail and although he doesnt focus on Rangers, he does mention one ex-Gers boss. Fergie talks about how John Greig struggled as a manager because, like Kenny Dalglish, he was an iconic player with little management experience. But he also sufferd bad timing when appointed in 1978 and Fergie writes: “John inherited a disintegrating team that could not be restored to an even keel However, Greigs team in his first season came close to winning a domestic treble and his European performance was admirable. In his first season, Rangers performed creditably to reach the quarter-final of the European Cup, defeating Italian champions Juventus and becoming the first club to win in European club competition at PSVs Philips Stadion, before eventual elimination to Cologne, who were the champions of West Germany
