Sir Robert has welcomed a report from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which shows that last year inbound tourist visits to the UK rose. In 2013 32.81 million visits were made from overseas to the UK, a rise of 6% compared to 2012. The ONS reported that overnight visits to Scotland increased by 9.8% to more than 2.4 million in 2013 and spending rose by 19.9% to nearly £1.7 billion. In 2012 99,000 holiday visits were made to Grampian and this rose to 119,000 visits in 2013. It has been estimated that, including indirect benefits, tourism contributed £127 billion to the UK economy in 2013 and helped to support 3.1 million jobs. Commenting, Sir Robert said: It is good news that tourism across the UK is rising and I am particular pleased that tourist visits to Grampian rose by around 20% from 2012 to 2013. From the coast to the mountains we are lucky to be home to many places of historical significance, as well as many areas of natural beauty for tourists to enjoy. We need to build on that potential to bring a boost to local businesses and communities. visitscotland/destinations-maps/aberdeen-city-shire/
