Siram highlights state’s literacy rate in Intl. meet ITANAGAR, Sept 07: Arunachal Pradesh Education Minister Bosiram Siram highlighted the state literacy rate of 67.0 per cent (as per 2011 census) in the International Conference of Minister of Education of SAARC Countries on Alliance for Literacy, Peace and Development at Vigyan Bhawan New Delhi today. Applauding the role Saakshar Bharat launched in 2009 as a flagship programme with satisfactory growth in the literacy of the state making more than 75000 neo-literates, the minister disclosed that as of today our literacy rate is equal to the National Literacy rate and thus there is an increase in literacy rate by 8 per cent. “The Women Literacy rate has also improved considerably. We have set our future goal of achieving 100 per cent literacy by 2017, the minister disclosed. “I am thankful to the Ministry HRD particularly the National Literacy Mission Authority incorporating our remaining three districts in Saakshar Bharat Mission Programme as well as the Director, Nodal officers and other functionaries of the state Literacy mission authority for their active role in achieving tremendous progress of the Saakshar Bharat mission as a time bound programme.” “Literacy is not only soul of peace for achieving development but also the useful mantra for promoting dreams of replacing terrorism in the south Asian countries by pens and books,” the minister observed. The education minister said “today’s literacy is tomorrow’s empowerment, and Empowerment should be seen in a holistic view including Social, Economic and Political and Financial.” “National Literacy Mission Programmes have created many visible changes in the field. The changes in literacy figures from 52 per cent in 1991 to 75 per cent in 2011 are a classic example to show that we have achieved certain visible aim. The Twelfth plan will have to fulfil the dream; Literacy is everyone’s dreams, my dream, your dream, India’s dream and the Global dream of Happy to Happier world.” Vice President M Hamid Ansari and MoS for HRD Shashi Tharoor along with dignitaries and delegates from various SAARC countries, besides UNESCO representative S Aoyagi and education ministers from various states, SLMA directors, nodal officers and others participated in the conference which was presided over by Union HRD Minister Dr. M. M. Pallam Raju. Brief statistics of literacy programme (2011 census): Total population of Arunachal Pradesh: 1382611; 720232 (Male); 662379 (Female). Total No. of literates 789943; 454532 (Male); 335411 (Female). Total Literacy rate 66.95%; 73.69 (Male); 59.57 (Female). No of non-literate in 15 districts: 189491, No of persons made literate: 75000 State target: 100% literacy by 2017.
