SiriusXM The Village is proud to present an exclusive first listen to Tom Paxton’s new song “The Mayor of MacDougal Street” off his forthcoming album “Redemption Road” at 9 :55 AM ET on The Village Folk Show (6-10 AM ET) ch 32 on SiriusXM this Sunday Jan 25. Tom Paxton is about to release “Redemption Road” on Pax Records on March 10. Here is what Tom Paxton has to say about “The Mayor of MacDougal Street”; “I met Dave Van Ronk in the summer of 1960, while I was still in the Army, based at Fort Dix, New Jersey. I was coming to New York every weekend (once without a pass) and getting to know the Greenwich Village coffee house scene. Dave was performing at The Commons on MacDougal Street and booking the rest of the acts. We hit it off and he added me to the roster. I think I made about $10.00 a night, which meant that I could skip mess hall lunches during the week and go to the PX instead. Ah, the good life! Dave was an imposing fellow, tall and strong-looking and he had an easy authority to him. Not hard to understand; hed been here long before the rest of us, done all his wood-shedding and new more folk songs than all of us put together. Luckily he was also a warm-hearted pussycat when you came to know him––with the priceless gift of friendship. He took me under his wing and we became the best of friends. Indeed, he was my best man when my wife, Midge, and I were married in 1963. He was amused by my square politics––he called me Pogo––and I got a kick out of his radical SWP riff. He mentored so many young performers that somebody called him The Mayor Of MacDougal Street and it stuck. To anyone interested in reading about how it was back in that particular day, Daves memoir, The Mayor Of MacDougal Street is where to begin.” - Tom Paxton
