Sitram elated with Pre-Cadet medal haul Published: Saturday, August 17, 2013 Nigel Simon Text Size: Gayanand Sitram, manager of the T&T team at the just-concluded eighth Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Federation Pre-Cadet Championship at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Georgetown, Guyana, says the entire technical staff is elated with the team’s performance. Last year, the local squad tallied seven medals in Jamaica, four silver and three bronze, but this time around, led by Jasher De Gannes, T&T bagged 18 medals, eight gold, four silver and six bronze, to be the overall champion of the championships which began last Friday and ended on Wednesday. Second was host Guyana with 20 medals (four gold, six silver, ten bronze), while Dominican Republic won four medals, one gold and three silver. Leading for T&T was senior national women’s team member De Gannes, who after steering the under-13 girls, which also included Shanekah Johnson, Ray J Thomas, Chelsea Fong, to the team title on Sunday, won gold in the mixed doubles with Joshua Maxwell, as well as the girls doubles with Johnson, and the singles crown. Other gold-medal winners for T&T were Messiah Walcott (U-11 boys singles), the U-13 boys team of Maxwell, Jakeem Welch, Brandon Beharry and Roberto Johnson; the U-11 boys team of Brandon Lee Young, Walcott, Aaron Amoroso and Derron Douglas; and Maxwell and Welch in the U-13 boys doubles. Speaking from Guyana yesterday, an upbeat Sitram said: “Our entire contingent is very elated with what we have achieved in this tournament. We got a lot more medals that we predicted. “Coming into the championship, our target was for three gold medals but for us to come out on top in eight of the 14 contested events was unbelievable.” Asked what it meant for the sport locally, Sitram said the future was very bright for T&T. “We would now hope that the impact is great enough to send a message to those in authority that with the right support we can make a much bigger impact regionally and then on the wider scale. “At the moment, we don’t have the facilities for our players to train as regularly as we would like them too. We have to compete with the other sports at home for practice time at the major venues and once we get our own home for the sport we will be able to much better implement the policies of the Ministry of Sport.” Sitram was also full of praise for De Gannes and Walcott, who won multiple titles. “Walcott is only nine years old and he beat out his rivals in the U-11 category for the gold medal, which was a fantastic feat, while De Gannes was just phenomenal as she won every event she entered.” Other members of the technical staff were coaches Dexter Abbott, Simon Spicer and Jasper De Gannes and chaperone Emlyn Charles-David.
