Sitting here this morning with my coffee and childhood memories. Ft Hood was my home from the time I was 5 until 11. With the exception of times spent on my Grandparents farm in Oklahoma . Watching the news last night and seeing the pictures of Ft Hood, made me reflective. I kept thinking how different the place looked and how much bigger. Of course my hubby had to remind me that I lived there over 50 years ago. 50 years ago!!! WOW!! I am old! He also had to throw in the words half a century:) The movie with Mel Gibson, When We Were Soldiers Is so much about my life on the base. Remembering , when I was about six years of age, I had gone to a friends house to watch the Wizard of Oz. While we were watching, a knock on the door and three soldiers came in, talked to her mom and I was sent home. When I got home my mother asked me if I knew why I was sent home. I said no. She told me that my friends daddy was killed and they came to tell the family. I overheard my mom telling a neighbor that it was such a shame. They had a new baby that was two months old and he never even got to see his new baby. That has stuck with me all my life. The sounds, smells, feelings. It was the beginning of the Veitnam war, however, they did not call it a war then. Politics! Life in Ft Hood was different. The people are family. Everyone supports each other. I grew up with Army jeeps, tanks, fly overs, and war games outside the classroom windows that were a wonderful distraction with my ADD. These men and women go and put thier lives on the line all the time. And they do it willingly. Never do they expect to not be safe in thier own home. I still feel a twinge of being apart of this family called Ft Hood....My heart hurts for them . I ask that as I bow my head to pray for those that are hurt, and the families of the dead, that you would all take a moment to lift them in prayer also. This once was my home, and my family :)
