Sitting in Grandpas lap. The plumbers equipment whirrs to life in the bathroom one room over. My daughter startles, reaches out to me and climbs into my arms. She sits on my lap and looks at me, making concerned sounds and pointing to where the sound is coming from. I smile calmly. Its okay, hes fixing the toilet. Loud. You can close your ears. I say and show her how to cover her ears. She looks at me with skepticism. Do you want to go see the loud sound? I ask. Yes. she says and points. I stand up with her and carry her over so she can peer through the door. She clings and puts her head close to me and watches with curious eyes. See? Its loud. But its a tool and it will stay right there. Do you want to watch? She points back to the other room. I walk back with her and sit down on the floor. She listens for another minute or two and looks at me. Loud. It will stay there. Its okay. I say. And so she toddles off to play some more. Yes, noisy. Yes, loud. Yes, new. Yes, she needs to assess it for danger or safety from in my arms. And yes, I can respond and hold her close while she learns that its safe. I dont need to push her away and make her figure out how to deal with it on her own.
