Sitting in a coffee shop in Park Slope that I frequent, due to its vicinity to my job. Its just opened for the day. Shop owner had to call the locksmith because someone had put glue in the lock. He has had to explain this to every customer that has come in so far (why werent you open this morning?) So far, nearly every customer has offered their take (thats criminal mischief!) and also asked nosey, irrelevant questions (which locksmith did you use? Are you the owner?). Some even offering useless guidance for the future (theres a guy on 9th avenue, cant remember the name but hes very reliable). All the while, some young prick father is sitting near the entrance, reading a paper and ignoring his two toddler sons who have been screaming and whining since their arrival. At one point, I hear the owner mutter I got suckered into owning this place. Its my familys business and running it is not as glorious as it seems. His casual disdain for each customer is palpable, but it also why I keep coming back. This neighborhood is filled with bored monsters whose only contribution to society is their precocious offspring, and quietly witnessing a shop owner seethe at their mere presence gives me peace.
