Six Degrees of Separation and a Little Bit of Long Time Ago History ! The earliest known tribe to occupy the Manchester area were known as the Brigantes, however they became subject to Roman rule under Pr-Praetor Petilius Cerealis between A.D. 71-75. Further invasions of Manchester followed, which led up to the Norman Conquest. Vikings, Danes and Saxons all laid claim and made their mark upon the landscape. The influence of these settlements are still very much in evidence today in many ways, not least of all the names of places. Hulme, Davyhulme and Levenshulme for example are derived from the Danish word holm meaning a small island. The Saxon king, Alfred the Great (I wonder if he gave himself that moniker) , is said to have divided the realms of Manchester for administrative purposes into Hundreds, before his death in 901. Manchester was part of the Salford Hundred. However with the defeat of Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 (we all know that one) the local area came under the Norman yoke. In this map from 1610 the marker of Hundred is still in evidence.
