Six State Fair Stories to Tell 1) SNAKES ALIVE: Learn about the snakes of Indiana, their habits and habitats, from interpretive naturalists with the DNR Division of State Parks & Reservoirs. Always a kids’ favorite, especially when they get to touch some of the snakes. When: 10 a.m. daily at the DNR Amphitheater. 2) Historic Fairgrounds Architecture Tours. Take a trolley ride around the Fairgrounds and get the inside story behind some of the architectural features you may have never noticed. When: 5 .pm. Friday (Aug. 2); additional tours at 11 a.m. on Aug. 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17. 3) Kids Fishin’ Pond. Thousands of children ages 5 to 17 get the chance to catch catfish or sunfish in the 312,000-gallon pond behind the Natural Resources Building. When: 4-7 p.m. daily through Aug. 16; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 4 and 11; 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 5-10; and noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 18. 4) Taste of the Wild Cookout. Join the DNR and conservation club partners in a free sampling of such delicacies as grilled steelhead trout, turtle soup, venison kabobs and sloppy Joes, and deep-fried Asian carp. When: 11 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 3) 5) DON’T BE A THUD: Indiana Conservation Officer Tony Mann address the No. 1 cause of hunting accidents in Indiana – falls from tree stands – in this informative presentation on tree stand safety tips that all hunters should know. When: Noon Saturday (Aug. 3). 6) SHIPWRECK STORIES: Indiana’s piece of Lake Michigan is the smallest of the four states that share its shoreline, but it’s some of the most treacherous water in the Great Lakes. Did you know an estimated 50 to 100 ships met their graves in Indiana waters? Learn about shipwrecks and DNR efforts to protect these historic sites. When: 1 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 4). -30-
