Six Things Companies do That Thwart Their IT Security Efforts Network World (02/28/14) Musthaler, Linda Cybersecurity experts cite a number of things organizations are doing that undermine their efforts to protect their systems from cybersecurity threats. For example, many organizations are failing to use security technologies that are capable of detecting the latest threats. At the same time, organizations are generally overreliant on antivirus scanners and URL filtering tools, neither of which offer adequate protection from more advanced cyberattacks. Experts say organizations need to use more sophisticated technologies in addition to antivirus and URL filtering tools to be sure that they prevent advanced cyberattacks from succeeding. In addition, experts say organizations are generally failing to track the traffic and usage patterns of employees who utilize mobile devices and public Wi-Fi hotspots to connect to corporate networks. They warn that the failure to do so opens up the possibility that malware could infect an employees mobile device and then spread to an organizations systems when the device is reconnected to its network. Finally, organizations are often not putting together the information collected by different security tools to create a cohesive picture of potential cybersecurity breaches throughout their systems. By failing to connect the dots between disparate cybersecurity events taking place throughout an organizations systems, cybersecurity professionals may be unable to identify attacks until it is too late to do anything about them.
