Six killed as matatu plunges into a valley in Kisumu.................Six people were Sunday evening killed when a speeding 14-seater matatu rolled down a valley in Kisumu County. The vehicle on its way from Kakamega, lost control at a winding section of the Kiboswa-Kisumu town road. The matatu was reportedly speeding before it rolled 200 meters down a valley killing four people on the spot. Two people person were pronounced dead on arrival at the Jaramogi Oginga Teaching and Refferal Hospital where the injured were rushed. The 6p.m. accident was attributed to human error according to an eye witness. This was because the vehicle was not new to the route and the place the accident occurred is a known black spot. An eye witness Mwangi Guru, told Nation that the matatu passed him at high speed since he had slowed down on the bad section. Tyre burst He then heard the sound of a tyre burst before the matatu disappeared from his sight. After moving slightly down the hill, he stopped and saw the vehicle rolling down the ravine. “This is a just about human error since it begs the question how a normal driver can go down there at that speed,” said Mr Guru. Nyanza provincial Traffic Enforcement officer Joshua Omukata said the driver and conductor could not be traced. He said preliminary observations based on the magnitude of the dent on the car revealed it plunged on high speed. “We are yet to get the owner of the matatu to assist in further investigations as my officers were still engaged in rescuing the injured,” he said. Luggage and other personal effects of the victims were strewn all over the scene of the accident. It is not clear the number of people who were on board the ill-fated matatu.
