Six years ago, the people of Victoria resolved to tackle our growing housing and homelessness crisis. And together we’ve made significant progress. This month, weve moved forward, building 150 more affordable units in downtown and Vic West, adding to the 700+ built over the last six years. The focus on actively building housing is an important step in our housing and homelessness strategy -- a strategy that is delivering results. This past month, the City of Victoria received an increase in rent supplements that will help house 117 more people. The supplements will be administered through Pacifica, Threshold Housing Society and the Burnside Gorge Community Centre. This new money will make a big difference. And I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to secure it. I am very proud our progress. But the job is not done. The Coalition to End Homelessness estimates that we need another 250 supportive units and 1500 more affordable units. Some say the answer is to give tax breaks to private landlords. I say that theyre wrong. Gimmicks and shortcuts won’t work. To end homelessness we need to stay focused on building new housing. And with your continued support, we will move forward, together, and get those units built.
