Sixteen years ago, November 27 fell on a Friday, which turned out to be significant for our family. On this day in 1997 I had already been languishing in a hospital bed for just under four weeks. Its no secret that I am bad at some pretty common-place things (swimming and using the phone immediately spring to mind), but it turns out that I am TERRIBLE at being pregnant. I had both pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes, the baby was breech... as Dave likes to quip, I had everything short of gestational Bubonic Plauge. The baby was due December 21, but because of our rapidly deteriorating condition, the date kept getting moved up: Dec. 10, then the 7th, then the 2nd and finally they settled on Monday, November 30. But with the weekend looming, I guess the doctors got cold feet - they did a final ultrasound and decided to squish us into the last available surgical spot open on Friday afternoon of November 27, at which time Eve was born. A complicated delivery for what has turned out to the the sunniest, most uncomplicated and straight-forwardly lovely child. Love you, Eve Pest Dedrick, and good luck on that drivers test today. Happy birthday.
