Sixteen years ago today, your very pregnant mom and I headed out about 9am from our little house in wonderful Carmel Valley, driving up and over the mountain to Salinas where Thelma had a check up with her amazing obstetrician Dr. Billy Sanders, to check to see how close little Miss Katie Claire Puckett was to making her grand entrance into this world. And lo and behold when we got there, Dr Billy said why dont you all gather your stuff up and head across the street to the hospital and check in, because today is the day we all get to say hello to that cute little girl! He was such a wonderful and amazing doctor and had been delivering babies for 30+ years at that time back in 1998, Katie Puckett ! Needless to say your mom and I were in a bit of a state of shock because that is not what we were expecting that day! But we went across the street and checked in and we got into a maternity room, and you arrived at 3:13 that afternoon, weighing 8lbs, 7ounces--I was so incredibly blessed to be able to hold you immediately after cut the cord--and your mom and I were both in tears--the most happy wonderful amazing blessed tears running down our cheeks! And it may sound corny, but in that moment I felt the love of and presence of many generations of family members there in that delivery room--like a warm wind blowing over me as I looked at your full head of beautiful strawberry blonde hair and cute sweet face. The bond at birth that is instant between a father and mother and child, is absolutely the most intense love that I think I have ever felt and I just wanted you to know that your mom and I both have never experienced greater joy and love in our lives than when you and then your sister arrived in this world, and the following 16 years, having the honor of being a parent to a beautiful kind loving funny daughter has been my greatest privilege! Let yourself have the freedom to know that you have an amazing life ahead of you, with all the joys and happiness life will offer up! Yes, there will be tough times, too--and you have been through more tough times than most your age will ever know--but you have and will grow stronger with each trial! The BEST is yet to come, I promise!! You are so very loved--enjoy this day and this year!
