Sixteenth instalment of 75 years history of Bulli Lookout. Cars over the escapement .Some of Peter experiences . One evening a local policeman came to the kiosk and said he had received a report of a car being driven over the edge up towards Panorama Hotel. On investigating , we found an obvious spot and by shining the policeman,s torch and using my telescope we identified what was obviously a vehicle. It was the policemans duty to find out if there were any bodies in the car. As a local I had explored large areas of Thirroul and was able to lead the police to the car. The Holden was mainly intact but the engine had torn loose and fallen nearly through the car.. The boot was still closed shut and had to be investigated . Chap with us had an axe and the police said it was okay to prize the boot open. .The boot flew open and it was empty. This was the first of several times when I was needed to lead a party under the cliffs. Late one winters night Panorama Hotel rang and told me a man had run into the hotel and said his wife and two children had gone over the edge in their car, just north of the toilet block. This was a toilet block just east of the old highway and south of where the access road from the highway comes up to Hopetoun Park I dressed and went up to the site . The police were on the scene . We were all lying down and looking over the edge when there was a lull in the westerly gale and up from the rainforest we heard a childs thin cry. I led a policeman and a husky volunteer down the cliff face and around to the car. We found the two children alive and the woman deceased. One of the children were given to me to carry and the police had the second child. We retreated a little to the south and up under the cliff in case any of the rescue gear being erected dislodged a rock. Some of the crowd gathering at the scene moved onto the Premier Lookout Point and we were able to communicate with them between wind gusts. It was decided I would return to the cliff top and report to Sergeant Dawson, This I did and I found Jim Tobin from Bulli Ambulance Station had erected his rescue gear at the same spot from which he had recovered a body some time ago. Jim was down with the survivors but the high wind prevented communication. .I went out onto the Premier Lookout site and was able to relay Jims requests.for gear. About six months after a truck driver ran down to the kiosk saying he had seen a man drive up the access road and drive over the edge. I led an ambulance man and the police around to the scene and the ambulance man said the patient needed a doctor. The doctor went down on Jim Tobins rescue gear and stabilised the man who survived . i was awarded a certificate and. Police Friend Badge fir my effort in helping the police. I still have the certificate but lost my badge. To be continued.
