Sixty nine years ago this week my Dad (Dick Swartz), serving with the U.S. Navy in Guam, wrote the following letter home to family and friends: December 10, 1945. Dear friends, Sorry I havent been able to write for so long, but we have been very busy lately. I am making a stencil so I can send each of you this letter. Next Saturday we are having a good old-fashioned Goshen reunion here with Billy Sheffer, John Huser, Dalllas Rohrer, Don Whitmer, Leonard Payne, Dick Deisch, Earl Bechtel and myself. We are the only eight Goshen guys left here on The Rock and some of us are planning to be home by Easter. There is a rumor going around the island that some Navy personnel will be transferred to Japan in February. I hope not because I would just as soon stay here working at the personnel office. Rumors spread quickly in the military. The weather here is really marvelous with very little rain and temperatures averaging about 85 during the day and 70 at night. I hope that everyone back in Goshen will continue writing to us sailor relatives and friends, even though the war has been declared over. With the holiday season nearing, I want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Hoping to see all of you some time in 1946. Thinking of you, Dick Swartz, GHS Class of 1945.
