Sixty-six years is not a short period for a people to become a nation. Soon after independence we developed the habit of worrying more about others. Taking care of the entire ummah and adventurism in the name of strategic depth has cost us a lot. ... We cannot get rid of [millions of] Afghan refugees [still in the country]. ... Of the five [regional] coun-tries India, China, Afghanistan, Russia and Iran we only have cordial and friendly relations with China and that too because China is in need of a market to sell its various products. Annoyed with our attitude, all other (neighbouring) states contribute to promote instability in our land. . . Still our retired generals dream of conquering the United States and hoisting the (green) flag in every nook and corner of the planet in spite ofthe fact that the Taliban are increasing their control in the country. Our nation has not only collapsed economi-cally but also morally. Inflation and load-shedding coupled with natural calamities have become the order of the day. Floodwater inundates almost half of the country around Independence Day and our rulers prefer to go abroad for excursions. It is high time to ponder as to why this country is being dubbed `a failed state` by other countries, 66 years after its independence.
