Skiathos Dog Shelter THREAT OF CLOSURE! It has been a very stressful and worrying week for us: On Wednesday we had an unannounced visit from two of the ministry vets accompanied by one of the local policemen. Unfortunately after their brief look around the shelter and a few photos taken and questions asked they have told me that their report to Mayor will probably suggest that we are shut down!! One of the main reasons being is that we need a Shelter License to get this we need to follow some rules & regulations some of which are: That the dogs are not allowed to stay in the shelter for more than 10 days unless they are sick, after 10 days they have to be released back onto the streets! (Just can’t see anyone on the Island wanting this to happen)! That all the dogs (apart from pups) have to be in single pens measuring 8 square metres, 4 metres of which has to be a covered sleeping area. That we have to have a 60 square metre building (structure) that incorporates an office, a kitchen and a rest room with toilet facilities. (There may be more requirements to this so we have to check the laws) I know that a big percentage of people here on our page have visited our shelter, most of you more than once and many of you every year and I am sure you will agree that we try to keep the shelter a happy and positive place for the dogs to be. They enjoy being in the large open areas where they can socialise and play together, I hate to think of each and every one of them being stuck in a pen all the time and I dread the thought of releasing them onto the streets. This is not something that the local people here would want they have had many many years without the problem of packs of dogs roaming the streets and I am sure they do not want to return to that now. Already we have had offers of help from local people and I am hoping that most people on this Island will support us. Now we have to be positive about this and are asking for time to comply with these laws but the building, planning permission, drainage etc is going to cost a fortune maybe 50,000 Euros or more! We just dont know until we have confirmation on exactly what is required. It will take time, but hopefully if they see that we are willing to do these things they will give us the time. So now we are reaching out to you to help us save the shelter and the dogs. If you would like to help us with our fundraising and help keep the shelter alive donations can be made via our PayPal account: [email protected] Thank you for your time and your kindness xx
