Skoda India could bring the European Rapid to India next year...... Our sources close to Skoda India tell us that the carmaker may be looking at introducing the European-spec Rapid sedan to the Indian market. The India-spec Rapid, which is essentially a re-modeled Volkswagen Vento, hasn’t quite seen the kind of success that Skoda India hoped for. However, the significant platform sharing with the Vento and the local manufacturing has given the Rapid a competitive price point. The Euro-spec Rapid, which was designed from the ground up, is a larger car and dons a more contemporary design that falls in line with Skoda’s new design language that will debut in India with the all-new Octavia in October 2013. The Euro-spec Rapid is also more feature-rich than its Indian counterpart. Therefore, while the India-spec Rapid caters to the value-conscious buyer looking for a premium executive sedan, the Euro-spec Rapid could appeal more to those seeking better luxury and equipment in a compact form, albeit at a higher price point. Skoda India is said to start testing the Euro-spec Rapid in India by the end of this year and if the market is favorable for its launch, it will wear a new model name altogether. With the new Octavia expected to launch at a price point starting at Rs 14 lakh, the Euro-spec Rapid could find itself sitting between the India-spec Rapid and the Octavia.
