Skye came into our care after her owner died and she was placed in - TopicsExpress

Skye came into our care after her owner died and she was placed in boarding kennels along with 4 other dogs from the home. Skye particularly did not cope well with kennel life and she was very scared and worried when she first arrived in the rescue, she was very defensive from being so terrified and in pain, it took a long time for her to relax in her foster home. Skye had been suffering from chronic eye problems and her back leg seemed to be injured. Her eyes were constantly becoming ulcerated and as you can imagine this would of been extremely painful. She had been tried with a variety of eye drops none taking any effect. The last two ulcers she had actually merged and became quite large so the decision was made to operate on her eyes. This should hopefully relieve the problem on her eye, if not unfortunately it may be a case of removing the worst effected eye. Skye’s leg also had a large sore, this was treated with courses of different antibiotics, the wound would start to heal then a few days later, reopen and become sore again. After months of different treatments the vets decided it was best to operate to see what was underneath and what was the main route of the problem. The vets were shocked at what they saw. At a previous time somebody had attempted to perform collective surgery of her patella, however it was a very bad job and there were infected sutures and nylon had actually been used during the surgery. Veterinary surgeries stopped using nylon way before Skye was born so we are unaware as to why it was used. The vets had to remove all of the old sutures and redo the surgery and fixing of the leg. It is such a lot for Skye to take on and we completely understand why she was so worried and defensive when she came to us, but now she is like a different dog, very friendly and loving and so trusting with her foster family. Altogether Skye’s vet bills currently stand at £2094.52, this is without her follow up checks and her eye drops she will need daily.
