Slate has a fascinating survey about how much freedom people had as kids over the past few decades. I walked a mile to school by myself starting in kindergarten and I was 4 years-old when school began! (No, Abraham Lincoln was not one of my crossing guards.) My parents rarely knew where their four children were. As a mother, Im more afraid of texting drivers than kidnappers, and while I dont think Ive hovered over my daughter, I certainly have kept a closer eye on her.
