Sleep Medicine Sleep, memory and schizophrenia Neuropsychiatric disorders are primarily defined by waking phenomena, but sleep disturbances are a prominent feature and are often included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition diagnostic criteria. In schizophrenia, sleep disturbances have been described since Kraepelin,1 but the nature of the disturbance and its relation to the pathophysiology, cognitive impairments, and symptoms of schizophrenia have been difficult to define. Recent studies have documented that patients with schizophrenia have marked impairments of sleep-dependent consolidation of motor procedural memory2-6 and dramatically reduced sleep spindle activity. ift.tt/eA8V8J
