Slum Village Evolution 2013 The paradox of Slum Village is as follows. Fantastic Vol.2 is understood by many as a classic but others will contend that it is not lyrically strong enough to garner as much praise as it has. Since that first official debut release the group has put out albums that I would have to say sound more like....rap that folks want to hear but no one has put these albums on many pedestals. The paradox continues as many people do not respect or have a desire to listen to SV because Jay Dee a.k.a. J-Dilla left the group and shortly there after Baatin. The group changed with almost each release but once again the original trio is who the people want.. but they didnt rhyme well???? (scratching head) A true example of not being able to please everyone and a perfect design for calling this latest SV release Evolution. It is exactly what this group has been dealing with since 1996. As much of a SUPER fan I am of Fantastic Vol.2 I am first a fan of the HOP and I cant deny a good album if I hear it. Evolution plays it safe as the one thing the lone remaining, founding member T3 has figured out over the years is this groups audience. You still get the tribe vibe feel that has always been there but with a more rough edge. Examples of this can be heard on the opener Braveheart featuring Havoc from Mobb Deep and the track Bout That. The issue I had was Young RJs kicks can be predictable but this has been his style for years so I know what I am getting into. I didnt think I would enjoy this album as its predecessor Villa Manifesto felt like they were running out of gas, not to mention there was tension within the group that caused Elzhi to leave. Slum Village reminds me of Twentieth Century FOX owning certain Marvel characters (i.e. X-Men, Fantastic Four), when these movies come out you want them to fail so that we can get back to what we feel is normal but when they end up being entertaining you cant deny it. Evolution is that movie, not who you wish was making the film but still able to get a thumbs up right when you think its over. What did you think of the album? Singles include: Forever, Summer Breeze, Braveheart & Let It Go
