Slums at the rear of No.30 - 32 Oxford Street, Paddington, 1900. In 1900, Sydney was affected by an outbreak of Bubonic Plague. Slum areas, including this part of Paddo, were quarantined and included in government cleansing and disinfecting operations from 24 March – 17 July. Slums like these old stables, were photographed by inspectors and notes taken about the conditions, before demolition. Local residents were employed to undertake the cleansing, disinfecting, burning and demolition of the infected areas, including their own homes.
