Small acts of intervention from watchful citizens can change many things. Due to heavy rains last week, a large hole was created in the middle of the bridge on the Barhmani River in Panposh, Rourkela, which is already in a very bad condition. This is the only bridge that connects Rourkela with Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Ranchi, etc. and as such thousands of cars, buses and trucks pass through it every day. Like business as usual, National Highway Authorities began repair work even while allowing the vehicles to cross over the bridge, without caring for their safety. When some volunteers from AAP Sundargarh noticed that the contractor was trying to do a shoddy job using low quality cement, mortar and thin 12 mm rods, they lodged a strong protest with relevant authorities. As a result, the contractor was forced to immediately replace the thin rods with slightly stronger 16 mm rods in the patchwork. Though not entirely satisfactory, this will at least enhance the strength of the patchwork a little more.
