Small lovable rodents make extremely apt anxiety-dream fodder. While I was in graduate school, we had gerbils. All my anxieties about whether I could keep it together, whether I could get that crazy thesis finished, went into my wild and bizarre dreams about gerbils escaping their cages, about my inability to take care of them. In these days of learning to balance work and life again, my primary dream creature is Afil the hamster. You would think she was my child, I have so many worry-dreams about her getting out, getting eaten by Fred, etc. Probably three or four hamster dreams a week. I have taken to examining her cage and its door latches and extra wire security bits every night before I go to bed. It would help, I suppose, if I would manage to keep from falling in love with the tiny critters.
