Small pet peeve, presented as a PSA: straight people who knowingly, deliberately refer to a male married couple as boyfriends or a guys husband as your boyfriend just because saying husband makes them feel weird. As if husband is just a cute word the couple is using instead of an actual, legal fact. How weird would it be if you (a straight person) got married and a friend insisted on continuing to call your new husband your boyfriend? Its a microaggression, and its bothersome because it says that you think couples who are the same gender are just kind of fake-pretend-married when they get married. Again, Im not talking about someone who doesnt realize you got married, obviously thats totally different. And Im not talking about myself either, cause were in a civil union so its debatable if husband is factually accurate, especially now that Oregon offers marriage to everyone. But now you know. Its kinda rude.
