Small rant: Education is my passion and I especially voice the need for scientific literacy; but today, its the need for reading. I grew up on Shakespeare and Poe, could recite The Raven like most sing their ABCs. Writing was burned into my mind and everything it represents: an emotional release, the means for revolution, the only sure way that another can read your mind, or glimpse into your soul. Today, kids have very little understanding of poetry and all that it means. Theyre vaguely familiar with Shakespeare, but they dont know his work. If it doesnt rhyme, well, to them, its surely not a poem. I wrote because it helped me cope. If we dont stress reading and writing, then theres the chance that the emotionally exhausted child may never find his/her means to vent.
