Small world dept.: Im at the annual Grand Forks Community-Refugee picnic in University Park, with my family and my new Somali friends Hassan and Sami, and here is another Somali man who came to Grand Forks after living five years and gaining citizenship in ..... Norway! So we jabber away in Norwegian as people from Bhutan watch and maybe wonder anew, What have we gotten ourselves into? This strange new language that sounds like singing with a sore throat, is that something we must learn, too? It was a splendid day. My 4-year-old granddaughter met people from Africa and Asia. The big grandkids did, too, and shook hands with young people who have made the same hopeful leap my father, their great-grandfather, made 90 years ago.
