Smart snacking can keep a smile healthy, especially for children. To snack your way to a healthy smile: Resist the urge to snack too often. Carbohydrates in both starches and sugars mix with bacteria in your mouth to make acids that promote tooth decay, and can damage teeth for 20 minutes or more after eating or drinking carbohydrates. Snack smart for well-balanced eating. Eat raw vegetables, fruits (like apples), plain yogurt, low-fat cheese, milk and popcorn. Limit sugary snacks that dissolve slowly in your mouth. Sucking on slow-dissolving foods, like hard candies, prolongs the time when sugar bathes your teeth. Sipping on sugar-sweetened drinks has the same effect. Brush as soon as you can after snacking or at least rinse your mouth with water to get rid of any food on your teeth.
