Smh. This could have been your mother, father, brother, sister, or friend. This could have been YOU. And to add insult to injury, the police department who hired this guy is STILL trying to prosecute the woman who was beat in this picture; put the scarlet letter of Criminal on her and further ruin her life. When are we going to get it through our heads that there needs to be sweeping reform in the law enforcement agency? This isnt a case of just a few bad apples. I know people who have had their lives and careers destroyed by vindictive police or have been severely beaten in and outside of jail - but there were no cameras present to prove it. If you do a bit of research you’ll find a disturbing trend of citizen and prisoner abuse by law enforcement and endless cover ups. I can almost guarantee you that this stuff is so prevalent, that your local police department has had at least one (legitimate) abuse scandal in the past year. There is a great short documentary on NPR about the unwritten laws of law enforcement and prison personnel (e.g., whenever you get in a physical altercation with a prisoner, make sure you send them to the hospital to teach them some twisted lesson). When are we going STOP placing blame on the victims of these incidences and start seeing that the system IS corrupt; that these things arent just the consequences of poor personal decisions? (she deserved it, she is a criminal that prisoner deserves anything that happens to them b/c they are in prison). Like so many other issues in our country, we need to stop sitting on the side lines and believe that “since it hasn’t happened to me, it must not be a problem.”
